Our client, a global construction company, is looking to appoint a successful Crawler Crane Operator to be based in Cabo Delgado.
OVERVIEW
The Crawler Crane Operator will operate a 280-ton crawler crane, specifically for pile handling and pile driving operations, ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient lifting and placement of heavy materials. The operator will adhere to all safety standards, assist in rigging, and work closely with the site team to achieve project objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operate a 280-ton crawler crane for the specific task of pile handling and driving, including lifting, positioning, and securing piles (sheet piles, concrete, steel, etc.).
• Utilize controls to position the crane and load according to specifications, ensuring precise and stable lifting operations.
• Follow detailed lift plans and site instructions to ensure safe and efficient handling of piles.
• Safely lift and position piles into place for driving, ensuring alignment and stability.
• Operate the crane during pile driving operations, working in coordination with pile drivers, riggers, and site supervisors.
• Monitor load conditions, ground stability, and surrounding hazards during pile handling operations.
• Conduct daily inspections of the crawler crane, including hydraulic systems, cables, booms, and rigging gear.
• Ensure all lifting equipment and accessories are compliant with safety standards and properly maintained.
• Verify ground conditions and crane setup to prevent unsafe operations.
• Follow all safety regulations, including OSHA, local safety standards, and company safety protocols, especially for heavy lifting and pile driving tasks.
• Maintain awareness of potential hazards, including unstable ground, weather conditions, nearby structures, and overhead obstructions.
• Properly secure the crane during non-operation periods and ensure safe crane shutdowns.
• Collaborate with signal persons, riggers, and other ground personnel to ensure clear communication during lifting and positioning tasks.
• Use proper hand signals, radios, or verbal instructions to coordinate complex pile handling operations.
• Adjust crane movements and operations based on feedback from the rigging and piling crew.
• Perform routine maintenance on the crane, including refueling, lubrication, and minor repairs.
• Maintain accurate logs of crane operation, inspections, and maintenance activities.
• Report equipment issues, malfunctions, or unsafe conditions to the maintenance or site supervisor immediately.
• Assist with rigging piles and load securing as needed.
• Help with site preparation, including positioning the crane and ensuring stable footing.
• Work as part of a larger team to ensure successful project execution, including pile driving, load placement, and overall site safety.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Valid crane operator certification (e.g., NCCCO for crawler cranes or an equivalent certification) with a focus on pile handling.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating large crawler cranes (ideally 280T) in pile driving and handling applications.
• Strong understanding of load charts, rigging principles, and safe operation practices, especially for pile handling.
• Able to perform physically demanding tasks, such as climbing, lifting, and operating in various weather conditions.
• Clear communication and teamwork skills for coordinating with site personnel.
